NEET 2027: why revision decides your rank, and what the move to a computer test changes

By Dr Hemant Upadhyay (Zoology, 18 years teaching NEET, ex-Allen) and Rajesh Sahu (Botany, 25 years teaching NEET, ex-Allen, ex-Aakash), Pramana Institute

From 2027, NEET UG moves to a computer-based test (CBT), as the Union Education Minister announced in May 2026 (PW). NTA has not yet announced the 2027 dates or detailed pattern, so check neet.nta.nic.in for the official notice. In past years the exam has been in early May, which gives a Class 12 student or dropper about seven months from mid-October.

Between us we have taught NEET Biology for 43 years. The pattern we see every year is simple: students who revise NCERT three times beat students who read five reference books once.

Why Biology revision comes before everything else

In recent years NEET has had 180 questions for 720 marks, and 90 of them, half the paper, are Biology. Almost every Biology question is built on a line, diagram or example in NCERT. That makes Biology the most predictable section, but only if you have read NCERT closely enough to recognise the line a question came from. One reading is not enough; three is where it starts to stick.

Why reading more books usually backfires

When marks don’t improve, students often add another reference book. It feels productive, but it spreads attention thinner. NEET rarely rewards facts outside NCERT, and every hour on a new book is an hour not spent on the NCERT lines that actually appear. Add question practice, not more theory.

Why Physics is where most students lose time, not marks

Many NEET aspirants are strong in Biology and treat Physics as something to survive. The real problem is time: slow Physics numericals eat into the minutes left for Biology. Practising 30–40 numericals a day is less about learning Physics and more about protecting your Biology time in the exam.

Why a wrong guess is expensive

Each correct answer earns 4 marks and each wrong one costs 1. A blind guess loses more often than it gains. Students who learn to leave a question they don’t know often score higher than students who attempt everything. Check the 2027 bulletin for any changes that come with the move to CBT.

What the move to a computer test changes

Reading a question on a screen, scrolling and marking questions for review feels different from paper, and it costs time until it is familiar. That is why we now ask every NEET student to take full mocks on a computer, not on paper, from December onwards. By exam day the format should feel ordinary, so all your attention goes to the questions.

FAQs

How many times should I revise NCERT Biology? At least three times before the exam, each round faster and more focused on the lines you marked.

Is NCERT enough for NEET Biology? NCERT is the core, and most questions come from its text, diagrams and examples. Add question practice, not more theory books.

Will NEET 2027 be online? The Education Minister announced in May 2026 that NEET UG moves to a computer-based test from 2027. Watch neet.nta.nic.in for the official notice and pattern.

How many hours a day should I revise? Droppers typically manage 8–10 focused hours; Class 12 students 4–6 hours after school. Consistency matters more than long single days.
