By Priyanka Jain, Admissions Counsellor at Pramana Institute
Shahdol is about 820 km from Indore by rail. The Narmada Express runs daily, leaving Shahdol at about 3:20 pm and reaching Indore at about 11 am the next morning, roughly 19.5 hours. This page is for families who have decided their child will study away from home for JEE or NEET.
Why Shahdol families choose Indore
Once a student is going to live in a hostel, what matters most is the next one or two years in the classroom, not the length of the train ride. Families from Shahdol, Anuppur, Umaria and Burhar look at the same things: who teaches, how many students share a class, and whether someone will notice if their child falls behind.
Indore suits families who want a large, safe city inside Madhya Pradesh, with the same state board and state counselling and an affordable cost of living. The direct daily train helps: a student can travel home for Diwali without changing trains, and a parent can board one evening and meet the teachers the next day.
Why a small batch matters more the farther you are
When home is a day’s journey away, you depend on the institute to notice when your child slips: a missed class, a falling test score, a quiet week. In a batch of 150, nobody does.
At Pramana every batch has at most 40 students, and every 20 students have a named mentor who meets each student for 15 minutes every week. Parents in Shahdol get a progress report every fortnight by phone or WhatsApp, covering chapter readiness, test trend, attendance and the mentor’s note. Our faculty includes IIT graduates and former Allen and Aakash teachers with 14 to 25 years of experience, and the teachers you meet at admission teach the batch all year.
Where your child will stay
Hostels near the institute include Rishita Girls Hostel and SK Boys Hostel (see indorehostel.com). A hostel with meals costs about ₹6,500 to ₹15,000 a month, and a PG about ₹4,000 to ₹10,000. Our counsellors help families shortlist and book a hostel before the batch starts, so your child arrives to a room that is ready. Our guide to moving to Indore for coaching covers costs and living arrangements in detail, and our page on why families choose Indore for coaching explains what to weigh before the move.

Scholarships: why the test matters most from far away
For a family paying for travel and a hostel, a scholarship changes the sums. The free online Prashast scholarship test runs from 31 October to 30 November 2026 and can be taken from home in Shahdol. It awards tuition scholarships of 25%, 50%, 75% or 100%, and the top 10 who meet the criteria also get free hostel and meals. Scholarships are confirmed after an interview in Indore.
